In March 2003, the Mário Soares Foundation, held at the premises of the Embassy of Portugal in Dili, coordinated by Professor José Mattoso, a one-week training seminar addressed to staff of the National Archives of East-Timor, the Presidency of the Republic, the Armed Forces, the Veterans Association and the Church.
The training addressed two key issues:
Trainees made the most of their involvement and the ability to some of them to work with computer systems was clearly demonstrated.
Mr. Rui Quartin Santos, then the Portuguese Ambassador at Dili, and the Secretary of State of Culture, Youth and Sports of East-Timor, Mr. Virgilio Smith, attended the closing session.
Special reference should be made to the fact that a former FALINTIL combatant has been given training in Lisbon and working at the Mário Soares Foundation from August 2002 to May 2006. His knowledge of East-Timorese reality has been critically important to the processing and organisation of the Archives. He has also excelled in gaining know-how in these domains.
Lately, with the Archives & Museum installation, technical support has been given to its staff.
