 Fundo Konis Santana

It was kept in his shelter in Mirtutu (Ermera), in three trunks, one suitcase and one leather bag. In addition to the paper documents, there were several cassettes, videos and personal belongings. The majority of the paper documents was very deteriorated by the humidity and covered by fungi. The documents were transferred to a house in Komoro at the end of February 2002, to the responsibility of Mr. J. Mattoso who started the cleaning and the arrangement procedures of the collection in March of the following year, with the assistance of the Mário Soares Foundation staff. Then, the collection was transferred to the Taibesse Veterans Association, in July 2002, there having been performed its final arrangement with the assistance of Mr. Álvaro da Costa.
The documents were arranged in the following order:

  • Portfolios 1 to 4: leather bag
  • Portfolios 5 a 12: red trunk

  • Portfolios 15 to 18: wooden trunk

  • Portfolios 31 to 33: printed books, guerrilla instructions, receipts and personal belongings.

The documents, classified with the numbers 10.1 to 10.41, were in a special portfolio (leather imitation). From its contents it is possible to presume that the documents inside were particularly sensitive, but in a latter phase, other less important documents were added, without any logical criteria. As for the remaining documents, the most part was not grouped in sets. Nevertheless, the sets found were integrated in the computer file.

It is composed by 119 items of gelatine silver salts, in paper format 9 x 14 cm, glued on sheets of sticker card, and covered with plastics.
The diagnosis of its conservation state demonstrated that the proofs had some specks, due to the action of the glue, what would eventually originate the complete deterioration. It was decided to remove them from the original album and process the proofs individually. The residues of glue were removed, scraping them and using a solvent of tricloroetilene; as for the emulsion it was treated with Pec 12.
A new acid-free album replaced the original album, in order to preserve the material of the items and respecting the original order. The photographs were disposed, using acid-free corners, in acid-free sheets of paper, distributed by individual Melinex portfolios and grouped, according to the original order, in an acid-free file.

 Fundo Ramos-Horta

José Ramos-Horta, Peace Nobel Laureate in 1996, that played several roles abroad, since 1975 – having been the FRETILIN, CNRM and Xanana Gusmão’s representative – permanently denouncing the atrocities committed by the Indonesian occupying forces over the Timorese people, delivered a vast document collection that captures the reality inside the territory, the evolution of the structure of the Outside Front and the relations with solidarity movements. The set of photographs mainly illustrates the day-to-day life of the guerrillas in the mountains and the brutality of the occupying power.

 Fundo Riak Leman

This collection was kept at Riak Leman (Vidal dos Santos)’s home in Fatumeta. The collection was composed by documents of the Region 3 Secretariat and, from 1998 onwards, after the reorganisation performed by Matan Ruak, documents of the FPI (Internal Political Front, that aggregated the Armed Front and the Clandestine Front), that must have acted as CNRT Regional Secretariat. Picked up in July 2002 and deposited at the East-Timorese Veterans’s Association in Taibesse, the collection was scattered amidst confusion, most of it lying on the floor and eaten by rats. A certain number of files was classified by subject, but the classification process was poor, without a systematic approach and thematic overlaps. Nevertheless, the terms inspired the headings selected for the reconstitution of the series:

  • Population census (for the 1999 Referendum)
  • Circular letters and other documents emanated from the Secretariat or conveyed by it (appeals, circular letters, releases, instructions, summons, messages, service orders, etc.)
  • Circumscriptions (with documents related to population migrations at a national level)
  • Education
  • Organisation (composition of the leadership bodies, and names of regional and local leaders)
  • Indonesian civil servants
  • Travel orders
  • Dispatch notes (including order forms)
  • Information notes (issued by regional and local organs)
  • Militia
  • Women
  • Human casualties
  • Material damages
  • Refugees (in East-Timor).

Within these series, the documents were classified by chronological order or, in the case of the circumscriptions, by the name of the circumscriptions and, inside them, by chronological order.

 Fundo Sabalae

This collection, retrieved from the Inês Lai’s Coluhun hiding shelter, was delivered, together with the “Konis Santana” Collection, by Mr. João de Araújo (Herik e Irian), in Komoro, in late February 2002. In addition to the paper documents, there were also some photographs, videos, cassettes, a FALINTIL flag and a piece of cloth with a large photograph of Xanana Gusmão. The documents were generally well preserved. The majority was kept in envelopes and paper files: as a rule, re-used envelopes and files without any filing indications or with amended (apparently arbitrary) indications. The analysis of the contents allows concluding that the filing order of the documents was irrelevant, probably because they had been manipulated without any concern of preserving the initial order, or due to changes of the classification criteria. Many documents must have been displaced from file to file.
The documents were arranged in the following order:

  • Portfolios 21 to 24: card box
  • Portfolios 25 to 30: green suitcase.

 Fundo TAPOL

O fundo da TAPOL, que foi cedido para tratamento por Liem Soei Liong e Carmel Budiardjo, através do Prof. Barbedo de Magalhães, é constituído por documentação diversa e por fotografias.
The relevance of the documents produced in East-Timor is not significant within the whole set, except for the documents concerning the work performed by the solidarity organisations in support of the East-Timorese People, namely TAPOL and other international organisations. The relevance of the Indonesian documents within the whole set relies mainly on documents concerning President Soeharto’s actions and fall, and numerous press clips from the Indonesian and the southeast Asiatic press.
The documents were filed in portfolios that usually followed a chronological or thematic order. Photocopies, with legibility problems, compose one significant part of this set.
The documents collected by TAPOL were mainly produced in the 1990’s until the referendum, although there were older documents, namely those from the East-Timorese Resistance.
The set of photographs, mostly coloured and organized in albums, is composed by more than 1,100 items, most of them related to the solidarity organisations activities in the 1990’s, especially those where TAPOL participated.
These graphic and photographic documents are critically to the understanding of the role of international support to the East-Timorese Resistance cause, especially the ones involving Indonesians in the struggled for the Human rights and against the dictatorship, in their own country.
Their incorporation in the Archives of East-Timorese Resistance is, therefore, an important element to the understanding of many international events with impact in the Resistance’s cause.

Note by J. Mattoso about the main archive options

As a rule, we kept the order in which the documents were found, except for the case of the Riak Leman Collection. Nevertheless, the apparently incomplete documents were clustered at the end of each set (suitcase, bag or trunk), which allowed the documents’ reconstitution (by physical data: letter, ink colour, paper size, etc.). Whenever possible to detect, the same numbers were given to the repeated documents, versions or drafts.
The repeated documents were given the same numbers (which is the Konis Santana Collection’s case) or kept in additional portfolios in each collection (which is the case of the remaining collections).
The press clips, magazines and press releases were also kept in additional portfolios.
The sets of documents separated by envelopes, files or paper sheets were registered (in the field «Notes» of the automatic file), but these dividers were not kept, except those containing information considered useful or pertinent.
Options to the computer files writing:
To ensure a uniform heading for the person and places names, the following rules were considered:
  • a. We follow the standard proposed by Geoffrey Hull, in the Tetum-English dictionary, 2nd ed., Sydney, Allen and Unwin, 2001, for the names in Tetum.
  • b. The person compound names are, in general, spelled without hyphen (example: La Sama, instead of Lasama or La-Sama; Be Midar, instead of Bemidar or Be-Midar, etc.; but Tuloda instead of Tubir Loke Dalan – although it is its abbreviation).
  • c. The traditional names, often in Portuguese, are spelled according to the rules of G. Hull (Baukau instead of Baucau; Vikeke instead of Viqueque, Likisá instead of Liquissá, etc.).
  • d. Whenever possible, the original spelling is kept to the non Timorese names, as is the case of Cohen instead of Kohen, Bolly instead of Boli, etc.
  • e. In the field «Title», the original spelling of the document is kept, nevertheless introducing, diacritics in the Portuguese words. Thus, recepção appears instead of recepcão.

Each person name enters in the fields «Author» and «Addressee» under a uniform and controlled designation. Thus, Ramos-Horta appears instead of José Ramos-Horta, Konis Santana instead of Nino Konis Santana, Xanana Gusmão instead of Kai Rala Xanana Gusmão, Sabalae instead of Keri Laran Sabalae, etc.
In the field "References" we use the acronyms of the best known and easily identifiable names. Therefore, RH is used to Ramos-Horta, XG is used to Xanana Gusmão, KS is used to Konis Santana, AA is used to Abílio Araújo, etc.
